Kariobangi Baptist Youth Center

The Kariobangi Baptist Youth Center is located in Korogocho Slum on the outskirts of Nairobi. It operates under the direction of Pastor Euticauls Wambua, who has given his life to reaching the people living in this area of Nairobi. Located on an active trash dump the slum occupies approximately three square miles. According to some estimates, the slum is home to between 500,000 and 700,000 people. Occupants include displaced Kenyans as well as Somali and Ethiopian refugees. Over half of the inhabitants of the Korogocho Slum are children under the age of eighteen. The name Korogocho is a Kiswahili language term meaning “crowded shoulder to shoulder.”

Most here only earn an income, if they have a job, of less than one dollar per day.
Many families average six or more persons that stay in a single room shanty.
Typically, children there do not have an opportunity to go to school due to lack of funds.
HIV/AIDS is rampant along with many young people engaged in social evils.

Kariobangi Baptist Youth Center 2007 before updated buildings. The Youth Center has grown tremendously as only 7 years ago they had around 30 children and makeshift school rooms. Thanks to the generous support of many and the hard work of Reverend Wambua the Youth Center now has over 300 children and some wonderful classrooms as well as a feeding center which includes a kitchen for cooking the meals. The Kariobangi Baptist Youth Center is a beacon of hope to this community, offering both educational training and vocational training in sewing, hairdressing and wood working.

Three stories of the new education building are already in use daily, the fourth floor of the building is still under construction. We will also need to add a second educational building as the school is adding a grade level each year.
